Upgrading to Mac X Snow Leopard

article_teaser_snow_leopard_now_available-580x255

Apple just released an enhanced version of its Mac OS X operating system, the Mac OS X Snow Leopard.

You might not see much of a difference from the previous release, and that’s because most of the upgrades are done under the hood. †What you might notice though is its snappier performance. †It also brings back few gigabytes of space that Leopard previously occupies. †This translate to more photos, music and videos on your mac.

Snow Leopard also sports a brand new Quicktime Player X. I just noticed that QT could record movie, audio and screen presentations. I’m not sure if previous version also had this feature. †I’m really not a big fan of QT, in fact I prefer VLC over QT, but this †”new” QT definitely caught my attention.

Mail also got an upgrade, it now works faster when fetching my emails.

Some bloggers say that Snow Leopard is still incompatible with many software applications. †I still have to find out what those software applications are. †I’ve been blogging and developing applications on the Mac OS X platform for quite some time now and I am doing quite fine with what OS X has to offer and can work with.

While others have claimed that it is possible to upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard (thereby saving a few hundred dollars), I have not done this yet. I will check on this and possibly write an article about it in a few days, depending on what I find out.

I recommend that you have at least 5GB disk space available, 1GB memory and an Intel processor before upgrading to Snow Leopard.

You can get a single †upgrade for US$29 (plus shipping) or family pack (5 users) for US$49 (free shipping). You can buy the Snow Leopard DVD upgrade kit from†Apple Store.

The steps below outline what I have done on my own MacBook to upgrade it to Snow Leopard.

Step 1: BACKUP YOUR FILES. Use Time Machine. I can’t emphasize more how important this step is.

Step 2: Insert the Snow Leopard DVD on your disk drive.

Step 3: Follow the steps presented on screen. Mine, I just clicked ‘Continue’ buttons. After this, it will restart to a brand new Snow Leopard with all your settings and files intact.

Basically these are all the steps to upgrade to Snow Leopard.

You can now go ahead and check your remaining disk space. Mine, I have an extra 5GB disk space. BTW-You can check disk space by clicking on the Macintosh HD icon from you desktop and pressing the Command and †I (i.e. the letter “i”) keys simultaneously and look for ‘Available.’
