Wet snappers; Digicams for the outdoors

Not very long time ago cameras and water do not go very well together. †Sure there were specialty cameras that divers and other serious underwater photographers use. Or you could buy an expensive and complicated contraption to protect your regular camera from getting wet. But these had serious drawbacks. Either they were very expensive or they were too bulky and complicated you wouldn’t use them anywhere else but in the water. Or both.

Not anymore. Now regular-looking and reasonably-priced digital cameras are†available for the outdoor enthusiasts who are literally out there — exposed to the elements.

When outdoors doing adventure activities, it is so much more fun to shoot action photos right then and there, in the muddy slopes while the rain is pouring hard. (Photo Credit: Delbros AB Normal Club)

And these digicams are sleek and classy too. So now you need not invest on two separate cameras — one for your regular affairs and another for your outdoor adventures. The same digicam can handle both — if you have the right model, that is.

The last time I checked, which was very recently, here are what are currently available out there:

My personal favorite is the Olympus MU 1030 SW. Not only is it waterproof and shock proof, it is so sleek an classy as well.

Interestingly, I am yet to see a waterproof digital camera from Sony.

Which reminds me how my CyberShot died permanently some time last year after I accidentally dipped it in sea water for just a split second. †Regrets, regrets. †Looking at it from the brighter side, that unfortunate incident may not be that unfortunate after all. †It may well have been a blessing in disguise. †Now that I have my†Olympus MU 1030 SW, I can bring it with me “where no digicams have gone before” — in the pool, in the rain, under a waterfall, into the sea, in a muddy slopes of a mountain, and in other wet places that I am yet to explore.
