Best Tech Ideas in 2009, according to Pogie Awards

2009tech

First, a disclaimer. †It may sound like it, but Pogie Awards is not a Philippine-based awards body. †Pogie Awards is an informal top-technology listing started 5 years ago by a US-based Technology Watcher and NY Times Tech writer named David Pogue.

You can check out the original and complete article in NYTime.com so I won’t copy and paste it here. †I just itemized the list and gave my own two-centavos worth.

1. †DROID DOCKS

The†Droid is a Smart Phone by Motorola. †But it is not the one being praised by Pogie Awards. †It’s its dock. †I am looking forward to seeing a similar version for the iPhone. †The idea of a smartphone dock that sticks into your car windshield and then automatically functions as a GPS navigation device is way too cool.

2. †ITYPE2GO

This is an iPhone app that is supposed to make texting while walking much safer. †I have serious doubts. †I actually find it silly. †But I am buying the $1 app anyway and give it a try. †Who knows it may surprise me?

3. †MIFI

This is one really neat idea. †It is now available in the US, through Verizon or Sprint. †I’ll praise to no ends the first local telco to make this available in the country. †Attention Globe, Smart, and Sun. †The MiFi†is a tiny, credit card-size, personal, portable, powerful, password-protected wireless hot spot. Thatís right: you now have a Wi-Fi hot spot in your pocket, purse or laptop bag.

4. †SAMSUNG DUAL-SCREEN CAMERA

This ranks a close third to my list of most anticipated tech developments to come to our shores. †I’m not a Samsung fan though so I hope the others, Olympus in particular, will catch on fast enough on this one.

The front screen may be used for framing self-portraits, for letting your subjects see what they are going to look like, for displaying a self-timer countdown, or for displaying a happy face as a ìSmile!î cue when youíre taking a group photo.

5. †NIKON PROJECTOR CAM

This ranks as a very close 2nd in my most anticipated list. †It is basically a pocket camera with a built-in projector. †Isn’t that great?! †No need to crown around your camera when sharing photos with your family and friends.

6. †BING POP-UP PREVIEWS

I’m a Google loyalist, unfortunately. †But I have to wear my Tech Watcher hat on this one and check this out.

7. †PALM PRE DATA CONSOLIDATION

I’ll have to check on this, too, somehow. †Problem with Palm is, unlike the original Treo, it hasn’t gained much market acceptance here in PH.

8. †FIND MY PHONE

This is another God-sent for an iPhone user like me. †Except that it comes with a price tag. †Anything with a price tag is half not as good, if you know what I mean. †As David Pogue said, “The only thing that could be better than Find My iPhone would be a free version.”

9. †READABILITY

I have to admit that this one eludes me. †Pogue touted it to be “The single best tech idea of 2009″ and a “”real life-changer.” †It offers to†eliminate everything from the Web page youíre reading except the text and photos. No ads, blinking, links, banners, promos or anything else. Sounds boring to me.

And by the way, I couldn’t get it to work with Safari.
