Background:
Education Secretary Armin Luistro bared a proposed program that will add 2 more years to basic education. The program is known as “K plus 12″ or Kindergarten plus 12 years.
Arguments in favor of the plan, among others, include:
- Twelve years of basic education is the world standard.
- Only 16% of college students actually graduate from college. The K plus 12 proposal will benefit the 84% who may not get a college degree as it will make basic education sufficient enough for graduates to be gainfully employed.
Arguments against the plan, among others, include:
- It will add to the financial strain of parents in sending their children to school, especially in a predominantly poor population.
- A basic education made longer by adding 2 more years is not the solution. The root problem is the faulty curriculum. Therefore, the solution is to fix the curriculum.

This present government is quite very insensitive to the plight of the common tao. Kala ko ba kami ang BOSS mo, but as time goes by most of your cabinet acts like they are the BOSS and can do anything they want specially that DEP-ED guy, he’s very arrogant. He talks before he thinks. What a moron. Hindi nyo pa ba alam na napakaraming hirap na PINOY at iilan lang ang mga elitistang katulad nyo. Less talk, less mistake bro…

QUALITY not QUANTITY…Improve the quality of life of the people so they can afford to send their children to good schools. And better improve first the quality of public education in terms of facilities, curriculum, teachers, etc. para hindi taas ng taas ang tuition fees in private schools coz kung maganda o mas maganda pa ang turo at facilities sa public schools ay hindi basta basta magtataas ng tuition fees ang mga ito. The private schools is a breeding ground for corruption because how can parents send their children to schools which tuition fees amounts to more than P 50,000.00 a year, tapos tatlo-tatlo pa mga anak. How can they send them to this schools, e di kadalasan thru corruption….TAMA NA, SOBRA NA, TIGILAN NYO NA KAMI…BOSS

I think the 1st thing to do is to stop blaming now the administration, no one is perfect enough to make our country and situation perfect… the problems are here now let’s just stop blaming people and start participating in surveys like this because this is one way of informing the government of what the people wants. Reklamo tayo ng reklamo pagdating naman ng oras na we are being ask to participate ilan lang naman ang nag-rerespond. Even in small barangays people keep on complaining but if you are going to ask them to attend a meeting/dialogue, no one wants to attend… Tsk! tsk! Tsk! kaya tayo maraming prob. kse magaling lang tayo magreklamo per we’re not doing our part…
My opinion bout the additional 2 years in basic education is “NO” i don’t agree. The two of you guys are correct, it’s not the length of years of education that needs an attention, its the curriculum, facilities, and the quality, effectiveness and dedication of the educators. Curriculum because there are subjects that are irrelevant to needs of the students to be able to get employed after graduation; Facilities because we all know that not all schools (esp. in public schools) have good school facilities that are essential for learning; Effectiveness/efficiency and dedication of Teachers are also vital since i have known many teachers that are not as dedicated Teachers as our Teachers before. Sometimes they’re efficiency and effectiveness are being questioned. I for one had some experiences na laging absent ang teacher, tapos tamad pa magturo, they just rely on the reporting of their students without preparing themselves for the topics that should be discussed. I’m taking up Teaching Cert. Program as my second course so I can also teach in the future, but I’m really disappointed with the realities I’ve seen with these teachers… They are teaching us strategies to become a good teachers but they themselves does’nt show us a good example to become one… SORRY TEACHERS I’M NOT GENERALIZING… I SAID “SOME”!!!

Yes, it is a BIG NO for me..
.k+12 is a big burden to the government….more rooms, teachers( salaries of course!) etc. are much needed and according to the President we dont have enough money so ooooo where do you get the budget for the proposal…it is ok for us that can afford to have our children do more years how about the others that 6 yrs & 4 yrs respectively are very crucial to them? Does the government have the budget for there fares/ baon for the extended years?….Nagpapatawa ba si Pinoy sa sinabi nyang ” kayo ang BOss ko”…Did he speak to the madlang people about this matter?…Pinakinggan ba naman niya ang mga dinaraing nila?….dili kaya kumuha lang tayo ng bato na ipopukpok natin sarili nating ulo….hay naku Philippines…kawawa naman tayo….

K plus 12 can enhance our knowledge, but how about our poor countrymen, most of the students can not graduate because of poverty…..
Our government must do a solution for this..

K plus 12 is one way to improve the quality education of our country because Philippines is only 10 years education curriculum that’s why our graduates is not totally ripe to have a better job. But on the other side it is a biggest problem actually nowadays the department of education is not enough or lack of classroom, teachers, and other instructional materials. How K+12 happen if the situation of our educational system is a lot of problems…. THINK ABOUT IT!!!!!
che
para sa akin isa etong k+12 ay for practical reasons kasi tingnan nyo ha pagkatapos mo ng junior high school which is the four year high school now , even though madadagdagan nga nang 2 years, pero isipin na lang natin, pagkatapos ng 2 years na yon mayroon na tayong isang solidong skill sa isang particular na field
che
kaya for me it is a definitely BIG YES!

That is not the solution to the problem. The present 10 years of elementary and high school education is already sufficient to produce competitive graduates. Adding two more years will not produce the desired results if the present condition of our educational system does not improve. It will only add to the burden of parents. What the government should do is to improve the quality of our educational system, build more classrooms, hire additional teachers and increase their salaries, conduct regular training and re-training to make them more efficient, provide adequate textbooks to students,

With this recent issue regarding the “K+12″ plan, I vehemently say NO. Why? well, first of all, the main problem in our education system is the deteriorating quality of graduates. we all know it’s reasons: ineffective curriculum, lack of school equipment and educational materials, lack of classrooms and some ineffective teachers. If we try to ponder on the K+12 scheme, which means extending two more years in basic education, I believe that it only exacerbates to the present problem of our education system. It is because additional years means more classrooms, more school equipment, more teachers, in short – more monetary allotment, and we all know that we have a big problem in the education budget. Thus, the root of the problem is not even addressed with this plan of the present administration. Second, the proponents of this plan are telling us that adopting this system from USA means the future graduates will be “employable.” My apprehension is that will the employers accept them knowing the present quality of the education system? Can the proponents assure us that when these students graduate, they really will be equipped with the skill they enrolled for?
To cut my point short, number of years does not necessarily mean quality education. Even if we extend it to 10 to 20 more years, yet the deteriorating educational system, nothing will change because the main problem is not solved.
If I were to ask, the present administration must first solve our education problems. after that, then we can probably adopt the K+12 scheme because it also will be beneficial to the youth. my only concern is, the scheme is not timely.

I definitely agree with all you guys: the Yes’ and the Nos. We need to solve the heart of the matter: the curriculum, the facilities, the teachers and not to mention, the style of teaching.
For the curriculum, I for one believe that our present curriculum is too crammed; imagine having to teach Grade 1 pupils addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, monetary, fractions, etc. all mixed up like chopsuey in a year. It’s too cramped. Americans do otherwise. Grade 1 is just for addition mastery, then grade 2 is for subtraction mastery, so on and so forth. My point is, we’re leaning so much into skimming and memorizing by rote instead of being trained to master the rudiments, to do critical thinking and reasoning. That’s why I support and did home-schooling for my kids’ pre-school.
Then for teachers, and students also, most are confused I think due to the trilingual system we embrace. In a certain province, we speak our local dialect then we have to learn Filipino and English all at once. That’s why our English becomes topsy-turvy and our Filipino becomes mediocre because even our very teachers, our very educators, are teaching a language that isn’t a mother tongue to them.
Another is the idea that academics is the main thing. Without it, you can’t land a gainful job. No, academics is just one of them but NOT the whole thing because we must enforce the multifaceted areas of intelligences and recognize the uniqueness of each student.
Haay, I would rather not delve into facilities because I think it’s too conspicuous a matter already which no doubt exacerbates the situation.
So. my stand: if K+12 proponents aims to solve this ocean of lack and defect, then I am for K+12. Otherwise, like the rest of practical Filipinos, this would only be waste of time and money.

i just dropped by looking for a good topic in my undergrad thesis… apparently i was partially forced to post my notion about the poll. well, as for me, i dont think adding two more years in the basic education here in the philippines will solve the very classic social issue about quality education. first thing is, we cannot deny the fact that up to now, we belong to the third world country. and that only means that we cant just immediately compare our situation in the first world countries such as USA, Japan, etc., do the proponents of this issue think that Philippines can do, what americans and japanese done for the betterment of their country and countrymen? of course not! besides, accept the fact that poverty will reigns as long as there are corrupt politicians and public servants who didnt even know the true meaning of Art 11 sec 1 in our 1987 constitution, w/c states “Public office is a public TRUST.” ! perhaps it maybe entitled unaccountability of public officials!
sorry for the supreme law of our land.
lastly, i dont think its very good topic.
